Quick answers

The questions everyone asks

What does 'oy' actually mean?
An all-purpose release valve. Depending on your sigh, it means 'I'm exhausted,' 'that's catastrophic,' or 'why did I walk upstairs again?'
How do you pronounce chutzpah?
HOOT-spah. The 'c' is silent. Start with breathy throat friction, then 'hoots,' then a clean 'pah.'
Schlemiel vs. schlimazel?
The schlemiel spills the soup. The schlimazel is who it lands on.
Can you call yourself a mensch?
No. It's a title awarded by others. Trying to award it to yourself proves you aren't one.
Our Philosophy

From shund to art.

Yiddish culture has always lived on a beautiful continuum. Just as 19th-century shund — popular, raw, sensationalist street theater — served as the vital stepping stone that introduced immigrant working-class audiences to high literature and Shakespearean drama, this site is designed as a playful, accessible entry point. We start with humor and slang, but we use it to funnel you into the extraordinary depth of Yiddish literature, theatre, and linguistic history. Every entry carries its script, its YIVO transliteration where it matters, and — where we have it — its literary origin.
